Our Rights Respecting School Journey

What Is It, And Why Are We Taking Part?

At Cedar Lodge, we prepare our pupils for tomorrow, today, focusing on:

• Empathy
• Collaboration
• Perseverance
• Creativity
• Independence
• Self-belief

Our school has just been awarded the RRSA Bronze: Rights Committed School. As a school we aim to show good progress towards embedding children’s rights in the school’s policy, practice and ethos. Therefore, we are going to further embed our school ethos and practice to ensure our children have a safe place to learn, where they are respected, their talents are nurtured, and they can thrive, whilst giving children the best chance to lead happy, healthy lives and to be responsible, active citizens.

What is a Rights Respecting School?

The Rights Respecting Schools Award recognises schools that place children’s rights at the heart of their school.  It is an award delivered by UNICEF, the world’s leading organisation for children and young people, promoting the rights and well-being of every child, in everything they do.  You can find more information about UNICEF and their work with schools here.

Our school council is a steering group of dedicated pupils and staff, working together with young people, teachers, the senior management team, governors, and the whole school community, to lead Cedar Lodge’s RRSA work on embedding the principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) in school life. It is largely pupil led and these students play a key role in raising whole school awareness of rights and in driving forward positive change within both the school and the wider community.

Pupils meet fortnightly and work alongside others of varying age groups and while their work primarily seeks to benefit others. It provides our students with the opportunity to develop a range of invaluable skills such as teamwork, evaluative, planning and decision-making skills as well as leadership and communication skills.
